Who is a Physiatrist?

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians, Physiatrists, specialize in the evaluation and treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders.

Examples of the various conditions that are evaluated and treated include the following:

• Sports injuries
• Work injuries (evaluation and treatment as well as Independent Medical Evaluation).
• Personal injury such as motor vehicle accident
• Arthritis care/joint disorders
• Spine disorders (neck and lower back)
• Tendonitis/Bursitis

Non-surgical treatment can include performing a variety of injections, prescribing appropriate medications, ordering a specific physical therapy program, performing electrodiagnostic testing (EMG-Nerve condition study) to diagnose nerve and muscle disorders.

Many of the procedures performed include, but are not limited to:

• Trigger point injections
• Epidural steroid injections
• Nerve blocks
• Facet injections (for spine pain)
• Various joint injections (such as shoulder, elbow, hip, sacroiliac, and knee)
• Viscosupplementation injections to the knee
• Radio frequency ablation (RFA)
• Occipital nerve blocks

(Many of these injections are performed using fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance when indicated)
